The Orkney Islands, usually called simply Orkney, consists of about seventy small islands 16 km off northern mainland Scotland. The largest island in the group is known as The Mainland, with approximately twenty islands being inhabited. Orkney's administrative capital Kirkwall on "The Mainland", has about 7,000 inhabitants and a large port. The only other large town is Stromness at the western end of "The Mainland", with a population of only about 2,000. The third largest settlement is St Margaret's Hope, on South Ronaldsay.
