New beginning for historic cinema

BBC

A £1.8m project to restore Scotland's oldest purpose-built cinema has been completed. The Scottish Historic Buildings Trust has been involved in the painstaking restoration work on the 1911 Hippodrome in Bo'ness, which began in 2006. Falkirk Council are now set to install 21st Century projection equipment and seating into the pre-art deco building. The new Hippodrome is due to be opened by the local authority later this year and will also feature exhibition space. Original features, including the art deco signs for the toilets, oak panelling from the foyer and the original cast iron radiators, have all been saved by the restorers. The catgory A listed cinema was built by Bo'ness cinematography pioneer Louis Dickson and designed by local architect Matthew Steele.
