Graeme Massie Architects has won a competition to masterplan a 150ha site in Iceland’s capital city, Reykjavik, scooping €60,000 (£45,000) in the process. The Edinburgh-based Yaya runner-up triumphed over French firm Jean Pierre Pranlas-Descours and Dutch architect Studio Irander in the final of the contest, triumphing over other practices from Australia, the US, Germany, Italy, Belgium and Ireland. Four firms, including London-based duo Nekton, were awarded runners-up prizes of €15,000. Massie is now expected to be confirmed as lead consultant for the redevelopment of Vatnsmyri, adjacent to Reykjavik’s existing city centre, which may involve the relocation of the city’s domestic airport, originally built by British forces as a temporary structure during the second world war. “It’s an important competition, and we’re very pleased to have won,” Massie said. “Iceland is a relatively sustainable country with geothermal power, so the plan was to make it as sustainable an urban plan as possible and actually build on what it already has.
