More of Capital skyline wins protection from developers

Edinburgh Evening News

Three more views in the Capital are set to be offered extra protection from development in response to public demand. Views of Salisbury Crags from the Pleasance and the Meadows; Edinburgh Castle from Waverley Bridge; and the Castle and the city centre from the Meadows and Bruntsfield Links are expected to receive special status from the city council. They will be added to a list of dozens of other views that are to have special "planning corridors" created around them, restricting new development. The move has delighted heritage groups, although the council has been accused of acting too late to protect the views of the Castle from the Meadows, after giving the go-ahead for high rise flats to be built there. More than 50 iconic views of Edinburgh Castle, Arthur's Seat, the Firth of Forth, Craigmillar Castle and the New Town from various vantage points, had already been identified for protected status following a study of the city skyline.
