City needs some bright ideas

Edinburgh Evening News

It is one of the brightest spots on the skyline as darkness falls over the city. But far from being seen as a shining example, the brightly lit Bank of Scotland building on The Mound has been decried for being glaringly "over-lit". It seems that when it comes to lighting up at night, Edinburgh simply can't get it right. The Capital has been blasted for "indifference" to showcasing its architecture at night in the latest edition of the influential Old Town Association newsletter. While Glasgow wins plaudits for its "enlightened" approach, Edinburgh is lambasted on every point. The city's attempts at lighting up at night is branded "disappointing if not pretty dire". The report, written by John Knight, the planning convener of the New Town Community Council, calls for landmarks such as the Scott Monument and the Tron Kirk to be floodlit at night.
