Botanics funding opens Gateway to world of plants

Edinburgh Evening News

Work is to start on creating a £16 million visitor centre at the city's Royal Botanic Garden after the Scottish government today promised an extra £1m for the project. The extra money - which brings government funding for the Gateway Visitor Centre to £10m - means work can begin almost immediately. The centre at the garden's main West Gate entrance will include a restaurant and shop, a classroom and exhibition area. The West Gate will now close in the last week of August until the new centre opens in spring 2009. The North Gate, by the Queen Mother Memorial Garden, will be opened instead, while a temporary gift shop will be set up at the East Gate entrance.
