Threat to Dresden's heritage status raises concerns in Edinburgh

The Scotsman

A threat to expel the German city of Dresden from the list of World Heritage Sites should serve as a warning over the redevelopment of central Edinburgh, conservationists said yesterday. Unesco's World Heritage committee yesterday said Dresden would be struck off the list if plans for a four-lane bridge across the River Elbe were not replaced by an acceptable scheme. If Dresden was removed from the list, it would be the first time any site in the world had lost heritage status. The committee, which is meeting in New Zealand over the next few days, is also due to consider whether the Tower of London should be officially deemed to be "in danger" of losing its status. The committee has raised concern that the Tower, which was built by William the Conqueror in a strategic position to dominate the London skyline at a key point on the Thames, risks being over-shadowed by new buildings in the area.
