To be described by Professor Charles McKean as the "Medici of the North" is a huge compliment to Andy Burrell, the architect behind the Edinburgh-based property development firm that bears his name. McKean, Professor of Scottish Architectural History at Dundee University and a former chief executive to the Royal Incorporation of Architects, is obviously a fan of the Burrell Company, but is comparing Burrell's repertoire to the powerful and influential Florentine family from the 13th to 17th century a step too far? Not if you ask architect John Forbes, who has worked alongside Burrell since 1988. Projects completed include the £7 million No 1 Parliament Square development which turned one of Edinburgh's most prestigious addresses into much sought after residential and commercial space. Nearby, the £15m regeneration of the Cowgate and The Tron in the heart of Edinburgh's old town created new commercial and residential properties and Ramsay Gardens, perhaps the best location in Scotland in the shadow of Edinburgh Castle, where buildings created in 1733 were sympathetically converted back to residential properties.
