Plans for a £53 million stadium in Edinburgh were dismissed as "dead in the water" by the council's planning leader yesterday. The Sighthill Park stadium plan, which included an athletics and rugby arena and was the flagship project of the previous Labour administration, is not likely to be approved, said Jim Lowrie, of the ruling Liberal Democrats. The stadium was intended by Labour councillors to replace ageing Meadowbank Stadium. But yesterday, Mr Lowrie said the plan was "a white elephant" and local protests against the closure of a park to accommodate the arena had effectively killed off the project.
