City looks underground to link stations with St James Centre

Edinburgh Evening News

An underground network of escalators would link Edinburgh's central rail and bus stations with the St James Centre under plans being considered by the city council. Planners are investigating whether disused railway tunnels under Princes Street and St Andrew Square could be opened up and fitted with escalators to provide a pedestrian link between the two stations and the new St James development. The move has been suggested as part of plans for the centre that will eventually see a new shopping, housing and leisure quarter on the eyesore site. Heritage groups asked the council to explore opening tunnel links connecting Waverley Station, the bus depot and the new shopping centre. Planners are also considering other suggestions such as a Covent Garden-style public meeting space inside the quarter and removing the bridge on Leith Street.
