Caltongate 'a 60s-style disaster in the making'

Edinburgh Evening News

A former city planning leader today warned Edinburgh could be landed with the 21st century equivalent of the eyesore St James Centre unless it takes tighter control of the £300 million Caltongate development. The warning came as officials recommended councillors fast-track special approval next week for developers to start work on foundations for the massive project next to the council headquarters in the Old Town. Developers say the plans would lead to the creation of 200 homes, 1700 jobs, a five-star hotel, a public square and an arts and culture quarter next to the new council HQ at Waverley Court. But the proposed scheme also involves the demolition of a 1930s tenement block to create a "breakthrough" on the Royal Mile and the demolition of two listed buildings to make way for the hotel complex.
