Fears for heritage status fail to halt revamp of square

Edinburgh Evening News

A multi-million pound redevelopment of St Andrew Square has been given the go-ahead despite fears it could endanger the city's World Heritage status. Councillors warned that the demolition of listed buildings to make way for two parades of shops could "tip the balance" in the conservation area. But the planning committee voted by nine to three to approve the plans, after heritage groups withdrew their concerns. Councillor Trevor Davies, convener of the committee, said the plans to create shopping streets on the site of the former Scottish Provident buildings would bring new life and vibrancy to the south side of the square. Retail experts have welcomed the move, saying it will be the biggest boost for shopping in the city centre since the opening of Harvey Nichols. The firm which designed the store, Comprehensive Design Architects, has masterminded the new development on behalf of property investment firm ING.
