A £50 million shopping and office development is set to get the go-ahead for St Andrew Square. Two parades of shops would be created on the site of the former Scottish Provident buildings on the south side of the square, and on South St David Street. Work knocking down and renovating the empty buildings is expected to start within months after heritage watchdogs withdrew their concerns. Councillors are expected to give the scheme their approval at a planning meeting next week. The development is expected to create between eight and ten two to three-storey shops. There would also be flats and offices, mainly on the upper floors. The move has been welcomed by retail experts as the biggest boost for shopping in the city centre since the opening of the upmarket Harvey Nichols store. The new parades are seen as a way of connecting the store and the neighbouring Multrees Walk with Princes Street, by creating an almost continuous run of shops between the two. The development will be complemented by the opening of St Andrew Square Gardens to the public.
