A new pedestrian-friendly housing scheme is set to be built in Craigmillar. Under the proposals, which are expected to be given the go-ahead by councillors next week, around 100 new homes will be built on brownfield land in the Greendykes area. The scheme, which has already won the approval of city planning officials, will also feature Dutch-style "home zone" streets where there are no pavements and pedestrians are given priority over cars. The idea was pioneered in Holland in the 1970s to create a more family-friendly environment.A total of 30 new townhouses and 62 flats have been earmarked for the site, which will also feature a new communal garden.
