City leaders today vowed to step up the long-awaited overhaul of Princes Street after admitting progress to restore its fortunes had been too slow. A new blueprint is being drawn up by the council over the next few months which aims to spark a major revival for the flagship shopping street. The council is taking over responsibility for the overhaul from an arms-length company it set up seven years ago. Officials and councillors have expressed concerns privately about the performance of the Edinburgh City Centre Management Company, which first mooted a radical redevelopment along Princes Street in 2001. A city centre development partnership, similar to one overseeing Edinburgh's waterfront regeneration, is now being set up by the council to drive forward the vision for Princes Street.
