Forth Bridge
A new Forth crossing, which will cost £1 billion and is expected to take at least ten years to design and construct, was given the go-ahead by the Scottish cabinet yesterday. Although exact details of the final route and structure will not be decided until after May, ministers revealed they have already narrowed down the options to three corridors close to the Forth Road Bridge. And it seems increasingly likely the final structure will be a bridge, with new studies showing rival tunnel options would be more expensive and would take longer to build. However, businesses last night expressed concerns that even if the quickest bridge option is chosen, a second link may not be completed until four years after the existing bridge may have to be closed to HGV vehicles, at the end of 2013. They called for the planning and commissioning process to be speeded up.
