Outrage over Red Home demolition

Edinburgh Evening News

A historic building at the former Edinburgh Royal Infirmary site is to be demolished, causing outrage among campaigners and heritage groups. Community leaders and heritage chiefs said they were "bitterly disappointed" with the move, which will see the 19th century Red Home building on Lauriston Place knocked down and replaced with an L-shaped restaurant and civic square. Council planning leaders gave a green light to the proposals, which have been under consideration for almost a year, following a vote yesterday. The B-listed former nurses' accommodation block will be levelled under the plans - part of the huge Quartermile scheme. A small tower from the original building will be retained as a memorial to the Red Home, while a commemorative marble plaque from its main foyer will also be restored in the new development.
