'Tower block' wins approval

Edinburgh Evening News

Controversial plans to build an 11-storey block of flats and demolish a listed building on the site of the old ERI have won the backing of city planning officials despite widespread protests. Scottish ministers will have to rule on at least part of the Quartermile development should councillors follow the advice of their officials and approve the plans next week. The plans - including offices, shops, restaurants, flats, a public square and a hotel - have been heavily criticised by community leaders and heritage watchdogs who have been angered by the size of some of the proposed buildings and plans to demolish the 19th-century Red Home building. The former nurses' accommodation was designed by renowned Scottish architect Sidney Mitchell in 1895 and is B-listed.
