The winners of the RIBA President's Medals Student Awards 2006 in association with Atkins were announced last night in a ceremony at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). These prestigious awards promote excellence in the study of architecture, reward talent, and offer a range of opportunities to the international architects of the future. The awards are supported by iGuzzini, Paul Davis and Partners, and the SOM Foundation. An exhibition of the students' winning work will be on show at the RIBA, 66 Portland Place, London W1 from 7 December to 31 January 2007 before travelling to Canterbury from 11 January and on to venues around the country throughout 2007. A student from the Mackintosh School of Architecture in Glasgow is one of three winners of the RIBA President's Medals Students Awards.
Schools of architecture offering RIBA validated courses around the world were asked to nominate two of their best student design projects at Part 1 (first degree), two at Part 2 (second degree) and one dissertation for consideration for the annual awards. The Bronze Medal is awarded to a Part 1 student and the Silver Medal to a Part 2 student; the Dissertation Medal is awarded for the best exploration of different subjects, methodologies and presentations.
Brian Macken's Kelvin Archive proposes a home for the archives of Lord Kelvin, one of a series of scientific, cultural and political archives owned by the University of Glasgow. The design provides bespoke storage and study facilities for the research community. Macken is a student of the Mackintosh School of Architecture.
Announcing the winners, Jack Pringle, President of the RIBA, said that "The RIBA President's Medals celebrate the outstanding talent demonstrated in projects that are emanating from architectural schools today. The RIBA is particularly proud of its international involvement in architectural education and is delighted with the very high calibre of projects and dissertations being submitted."
The 2006 RIBA President's Medals event also saw the launch of the inaugural RIBA Norman Foster Travelling Scholarship of £10,000, providing students with another opportunity for travelling and broadening their experience during their studies.
