The building of a third bridge across the Forth is an opportunity for Scotland to construct a design icon, architects and engineers said yesterday. Experts said any new bridge should become a symbol of Scotland's confidence and engineering mastery in the 21st century. And they said handsome looks should be integrated with the engineering design, but this need not increase costs. The Golden Gate Bridge has become the symbol of San Francisco, while the Oresund bridge - Europe's longest road and rail crossing - provides both a symbolic and physical link between Denmark and Sweden. In France, architect Norman Foster was acclaimed for making the Millau road bridge - the world's highest - "a model of art" in the Massif Central mountains. Riccardo Marini, Edinburgh City Council's city design leader, said a new Forth bridge "should make your heart soar". He said: "In solving the technical issue of a new Forth crossing, we should not ignore the fact that it should also be an incredibly important visual statement for the nation."
