Charles Rennie Mackintosh described his creation, Windyhill, as a 'dwelling house'. But the intricately designed interior, with its flowing Art Nouveau lines, puts Melanie Cable-Alexander more in mind of a work of art. What price a home such as this? At what point does a house become a work of art, much more valuable for its beauty, its rarity and the name of its creator than for its mere bricks and mortar? And how can anyone put a value on such a property, should it come up for sale? These questions come to the fore with the sale of Windyhill, in Kilmacolm, about 20 miles west of Glasgow, which was built by the Scottish architect, designer and artist Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
