Historic cinema to be given £1.7m revamp

The Scotsman

A £1.7 million project to restore Scotland's first custom-built cinema to its former grandeur will start this autumn. The Hippodrome in Bo'ness, near Falkirk, opened in 1912 and remained in business until the 1960s. The iconic landmark then operated as a bingo hall and has been in graceful decline since finally closing in the 1980s. Now, however, the cinema is to get a new lease of life thanks to funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund, Falkirk Council, Historic Scotland, BP and Scottish Enterprise. Work will begin in October and the curtain is scheduled to rise again at the crumbling A-listed building in the middle of 2008. The Hippodrome project is at the heart of a £5 million Townscape Heritage Initiative to restore the historic buildings of Bo'ness.
