The Earl of Cawdor yesterday unveiled an ambitious plan to help reinstate Nairn as "the Brighton of the North". In the 19th century, Nairn was a thriving health resort, and for much of the 20th century it continued to attract visitors from across Scotland to its beaches. Between the wars, families from Inverness would take a house in the town on the shores of the Moray Firth for the summer, with the fathers often coming down at weekends by train. Although Nairn remains a successful golf destination, many believe it needs a commercial boost in light of potential rival developments proposed nearby. Now the seventh Earl and 25th Thane, who is the local landowner and an architect, is promoting a drive for the town's expansion south and westwards which he hopes will feed in to Highland Council's strategic thinking
