The new man in charge of overseeing Edinburgh's world heritage site has called for a debate on whether the specially-protected zone should be extended across larger parts of the Capital. Professor Charles McKean, who was appointed to the position of chairman of Edinburgh World Heritage yesterday, said protecting the neighbourhoods surrounding the historic heart of the city was vital to Edinburgh's future. Holyrood Park, Arthur's Seat and the Royal Botanic Garden all lie close to the existing boundary of the world heritage site. The architectural historian, author and commentator, who is currently professor of Scottish architectural history at Dundee University, also suggested the city needed to look at whether it should take more steps to cut down on the number of cars using the city centre.
