Building upon a charitable idea

Scotsman.com

Alongside the crowded, ramshackle huts of the impoverished Slovakian village of Svinia stands a two-storey oak building that the local Roma people call "the Scottish house". The community centre is nicknamed in honour of the architecture graduates from Edinburgh University who designed and built it. It's not uncommon for students in Scotland to get involved in charity building projects overseas. It's less common for them to set up their own charity and do it all themselves. The group, Voluntary Design and Build (VD&B), completed the Svinia community centre after three summers of work, and two further projects, in Croatia and Romania, are to be built this year.
