Charles: world should follow Edinburgh's lead

The Herald

Edinburgh's status as a beacon of architectural excellence is facing pressure from modern-day commercial pressures, the Prince of Wales warned yesterday. Prince Charles praised the historic blend of old and new design in the capital, describing it as an exemplary model for inner-city living. He argued that the city's urban and architectural excellence could be regarded as a blueprint for development across the world. However, Prince Charles, the nation's most vociferous critic of modern architecture, said Edinburgh faced challenges from commercial and development pressures as he urged conservationists, architects and environmentalists to work to nurture and protect the city's unique character. He made the comments in a lengthy address to delegates on the opening day of a three-day conference on World Heritage cities.
