Work starts on houses for island project

Evening Times

Work started today on a £4,5million project to build affordable housing on the Isle of Bute. Argyll and Bute-based housing association Fyne Homes will build 34 family homes for rent and shared ownership on part of the former Ballochgoy council estate. The project, backed by a 70% grant from Communities Scotland, will also see eight sites sold for self-build after a demand was identified. Builders George Hanson, based in the island's main town of Rothesay, won the contract following a competitive tender, and will create up to 20 new jobs over the 96-week project - including three apprenticeships. The jobs will be filled locally wherever possible.
