£50m retail development in store for landmark buildings

Edinburgh Evening News

Scottish Provident

A £50 million retail development is set to be created in a series of empty buildings in St Andrew Square. The overhaul of the former Scottish Provident buildings on the south side of the square will provide the city centre with its biggest retail boost since Harvey Nichols opened. Property firm ING, which snapped up the site, hopes to start work next year on the development, which will feature new shops, offices and apartments. Comprehensive Design Architects, the team involved in the Harvey Nicks store and the planned overhaul of the Royal Museum, have been drafted in to mastermind the development. The buildings have been lying empty for more than two years after being closed down by finance giant Abbey, with the loss of 900 jobs. Peter Coupe of ING said: "This is a key opportunity to increase the quality and range of both retail and office-floor space in the city centre within a development of the highest quality.
