A £40m redevelopment could rise from the ashes of Edinburgh's ravaged historic heart. Proposals for the Cowgate site in the Old Town have been unveiled by development company Whiteburn after completion of complex negotiations to buy the site from its eight former owners. The cluster of tenements, pubs and clubs was swept by fire in December 2002 and two-thirds of a large tenement was later demolished. More than 150 fire appliances from across Lothians, Fife and Strathclyde fought the flames for 52 hours, until the blaze was extinguished shortly before midnight on December 9.
