Demolition 'will ruin Old Town'

Heritage organisations today delivered a damning verdict on a multi-million-pound development earmarked for a huge swathe of Edinburgh's historic heart. The Cockburn Association and the Edinburgh World Heritage Trust joined forces to condemn a London-based developers' plans for a massive chunk of the Old Town. The organisations say they fear the Royal Mile will be ruined if the city council gives the green light to Mountgrange's Ł180 million plans for sites on and around the former New Street bus depot. Around 300 new homes, offices, a five-star hotel, cafes, bars, restaurants, a new public square and a cultural quarter made up of artists' studios, gallery spaces and shops are planned as part of the Caltongate development.
