In an article for this page earlier this week, Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce chief executive Ron Hewitt talked about "progress" and "prosperity" as he backed plans for the re-development of the Canongate area. This re-development, the Caltongate masterplan, is set to bring together two sites, the former bus depot on New Street (owned by developers Mountgrange) and the land on the south side of East Market Street (owned by the council). The £180 million plan will see tenements on the Royal Mile knocked down, a new route created between Waverley Station and the Scottish Parliament and a new five-star hotel and conference centre built. The council is currently undertaking an eight-week public consultation for the masterplan, which ends on Monday, and there has already been much debate about it in terms of the proposed buildings, the layout, the usesand the controversial demolitions of listed buildings and tenement flats on the Royal Mile.
