£20,000 plan for motors on parliament's problem gates

Edinburgh Evening News

Scottish Parliament bosses are to consider motorised gates for the entrances to the £431 million Holyrood building. The move, which could cost tens of thousands of pounds, comes after some of the massive metal gates around the site were found to be too heavy for their hinges. The Evening News revealed yesterday that there had been a series of problems over the past week or so, including gates which would not close and others which were coming away from their fixings. Contractors have also had to pay regular visits to the parliament to grease the hinges after security staff found the biggest gates increasingly difficult to open and shut.
