Old must give way to new in dynamic city

Edinburgh Evening News

An argument has been ranging back and forth in recent days about the Caltongate development, and whether it is a sellout threatening Edinburgh's heritage or a welcome injection of capital to a neglected part of the city. Statements from Edinburgh Old Town Association and the Save Our Old Town campaign that the proposals would demolish "fine buildings" and otherwise devalue the visual amenity of the district, seem to me to be wide of the mark. Not that I am averse to having the debate - I believe that is how we achieve progress. Indeed, last Thursday we ran a lively talk and debate featuring architect Malcolm Fraser, and Bill Cantley of the Cockburn Association. The event was fully subscribed and I have heard nothing to suggest that sensible people who care for the city agree that we need to balance our historical heritage and future prosperity.
