Architects fall out over move from townhouse to modern glass office

The Scotsman

Scotland's architectural incorporation is abandoning the elegant townhouse it was bequeathed by its founder in favour of an efficient modern office building, to the dismay of some members. The Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS) will debate moving from its current building in Rutland Square, Edinburgh, at a council meeting on 5 April. But members are concerned that the decision is financially questionable as well as the move being an emotive subject for some members. The organisation's president, Douglas Read, admitted it would be an emotional wrench for some members who had become "very attached to the old building". But he insisted that the more modern glass and concrete building accurately represented the design ideals of the RIAS. The prospect of change came as a shock to members who only received a letter last week regarding the possible move. A decision must be made by 11 May.
