One of Shetland's top tourist attractions is in line for a major revamp if an Amenity Trust plan can secure funding. Renovating and developing the listed buildings at Sumburgh lighthouse will bring the total cost of the project to £3 million including the £2.2 million initial capital cost of buying the complex. The Amenity Trust heard on Monday how Sumburgh light drew from 25,000 to 30,000 visitors last year - making it the Isles' foremost outdoor attraction. And even modest visitor targets being achieved would make the development "self-sustaining" according to the Amenity Trust. The "iconic landmark", which has been classified as an A listed building, is also one of the finest examples of early nineteenth century architecture in Scotland, according to a report by project manager Paul Harvey.
