Weak glue blamed for Holyrood beam fall

Edinburgh Evening News

Strong sunlight and weak glue may have been the fateful combination which caused a beam to swing loose from the roof of the debating chamber at the Scottish Parliament, an architectural expert claimed today. The dramatic dislodging of the sloping 12ft beam from its moorings yesterday as MSPs debated below is a huge embarrassment for parliament bosses who believed they had overcome the controversy surrounding the £431 million Holyrood building. Unless the all-clear is given by health and safety inspectors, MSPs may have to move next week to a temporary meeting place at The Hub, the City Chambers or the Church of Scotland's Assembly Hall, where the parliament spent the first five years of its existence.
