A multi-million pound bid has been mounted to bring a historic theatre back to life after more than 20 years. Leith Theatre would become a major arts complex under plans unveiled today by a task force of community leaders, business people and festival organisers. They hope to persuade council chiefs to hand over the running of the building and the neighbouring Thomas Morton Hall to a community trust for a nominal fee. Computer-generated images show how a 600-seater theatre auditorium, 150-space studio theatre, dance studios, rehearsal rooms, art galleries, artists studios, a restaurant and cafe-bar are all envisaged. The theatre, at the junction of Ferry Road and Great Junction Street, would be used as a Fringe and Leith Festival venue but would also host productions year-round.
