Cathedral's £7m restoration sees easy access ramped up

Edinburgh Evening News

St Giles' Cathedral

A new stone entrance for wheelchair access is set to be built at historic St Giles' Cathedral as part of the final phase of the building's £7 million restoration. Work is expected to begin soon on the stone ramps and steps outside the west door in Parliament Square. And a stone and glass ramp will be created in the Moray Aisle in the south-west corner, with construction expected to be completed by the end of the year. Architects have been working on the £300,000 project to produce a design sympathetic to the A-listed 15th-century structure. Robert Steedman OBE, formerly in practice in Edinburgh, was charged with creating the plans for the site. The building famously lay at the centre of the Scottish Reformation and is known throughout the world as the "Mother Church of Presbyterianism".
