An innovative bridge is planned for the Water of Leith which would help prevent flooding and could be raised to allow pedestrians to cross during spates. The £250,000 structure, which has yet to be approved by council planning chiefs, would span the river at Bell Place, where infamous floods wreaked havoc in 2000. It would replace the current dilapidated cast iron humpback footbridge, whose deck lies beneath the flood defence level. Devised by engineering firm Arup Scotland, it is proposed the new bridge would use locally-sourced materials and a sympathetic design to ensure it is in keeping with the nearby architecture.
