New offices, bars and restaurants are to be built at the foot of Calton Hill after the council sold a patch of land for nearly £3 million. Developers have agreed terms in principle to buy just half an acre of land on Leith Street, opposite the St James Centre. Around 80,000 square feet of new high quality office space is expected to be created under the £20m scheme, which may also feature new shops, bars or restaurants. It is earmarked for open space next to the existing Calton Square office development, which was built at the same time as the Omni leisure complex.
