Historic fire-wrecked mansion saved by £1.3m lottery lifeline

Edinburgh Evening News

A historic house destroyed by fire more then a century ago is to be restored an opened to the public thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. Plans to earmark £1.3 million towards a £5m project to save Penicuik House in Midlothian were announced today. One of Scotland's finest Palladian mansions, Penicuik House was designed by amateur architect Sir James Clerk, and was called home by generations of his family. The funding will boost plans to restore the historic mansion, and will also help pay for work to be carried out which will allow it to be opened up to the public. There are also plans to create a centre for heritage skills training within the mansion.
