Fury at 'disgraceful' Royal High plan snub

Edinburgh Evening News

The Scottish Executive was today facing a growing storm of protest over its "disgraceful" lack of support for a multi-million pound rescue plan for the old Royal High School. The architectural treasure is in danger of falling into ruin after years of being largely neglected as city leaders struggled to find a suitable use for it. Now a £21 million plan to turn the iconic landmark into Scotland's national photography centre risks collapsing because the Executive has been reluctant to pledge its backing. Sir Sean Connery and Sir Timothy Clifford, the director of the National Galleries of Scotland, are among those championing the scheme. The city council, the National Heritage Lottery Fund and the Japanese electronics giant Sony have also lent their support.
