MSP wants heritage status for abbey

A campaign to win world heritage site status for the birthplace of the Declaration of Arbroath is being launched by an MSP. Tory MSP Alex Johnstone called the town's historic abbey an "outstanding monument of huge importance" and urged local people to rally round his campaign. The historic 1320 assertion of Scotland's independence has iconic status for Nationalists but Mr Johnstone said: "This campaign is wholly non-political and open to all. Regardless of anyone's political leanings, they should feel comfortable about supporting this bid."
