Historic cinema for sale in face of outcry over superpub plans

The Scotsman

A historic cinema has been put up for sale after its owners admitted plans to turn it into a superpub are likely to fail. Lyn Goleby, managing director of City Screens, which runs the Cameo, the oldest cinema in Edinburgh, yesterday told The Scotsman she had been forced to take the step after admitting they were fighting a losing battle with campaigners against the controversial refurbishment bid. Under the proposals, submitted by the current owners, the largest auditorium, which holds 253 people, would be ripped out and replaced by a bar and presentation platform. The two smaller screens would remain, while the existing bar would be turned into a third auditorium, holding just 31 seats.
