Sir Patrick Geddes
Glass panels by artists competing to design a dramatic sculpture in tribute to the pioneering conservationist Sir Patrick Geddes are set to go on display in the Capital. Samples of work by ten local and international stained glass specialists are being unveiled at the council-run Museum of Edinburgh in the Canongate. After a selection process over the next two months, one artist from the group will be chosen to design an eye-catching glass memorial for the city's new £50 million council headquarters. The winning design will then be incorporated into a purpose-built light box in the visitor reception area at the Market Street building, which is scheduled to open in September next year, the 150th anniversary of Geddes' birth. The inspiration for the glass sculpture stemmed from the much-lauded "father of town planning" himself, the man credited with saving the Old Town from the wrecking ball.
