The new air traffic control tower at Edinburgh Airport has picked up a prestigious architecture award for its innovative design. Work on the unique tower, part of the ongoing expansion of the airport, ended earlier this month with the final stage of installing the equipment needed by staff from the National Air Traffic Control Service. They are due to begin working in the building on Monday, after an opening ceremony with the Transport secretary Alistair Darling, which will feature a fly-past by an RAF Tornado. But while the working life of the tower is only beginning, the design and architecture industry has already hailed the building itself a dazzling success. It was awarded the Commercial/Retail Project of the Year award in the highly regarded annual Builder and Engineer Awards.
