Waterfront plumbs the depths with design 'prize' nomination

Edinburgh Evening News

Granton waterfront has made the shortlist for the top prize in Scotland's notorious "Carbuncle" awards. The area - earmarked for a multi-million pound regeneration - will be up against Ardrossan, Coatbridge, Cumbernauld, Irvine and Greenock for the unwanted honour of being named the nation's "plook on the plinth" - the country's least-wanted architectural prize. But Dalkeith town centre, which was also in the running, has not made the shortlist, and the Scottish Parliament - which was originally nominated - has also escaped. Other Edinburgh contenders for Carbuncle awards include the £100m Omni Centre at the top of Leith Walk, which is in the running to be named worst modern building in the country, and the former Scottish Provident building on St Andrew Square. It has been nominated for the worst planning decision, even though it has only been earmarked for demolition by its owners and the move has yet to be approved by the city council.
