The architects behind London's famous Gherkin building have been drafted in to design a new concert venue in Princes Street Gardens. Ken Shuttleworth and John Prevec, whose design firm Make is also masterminding plans for the Granton waterfront, are to draw up a £5 million redevelopment of the Ross Theatre. Make will team up with the organisers of Edinburgh's Hogmanay celebrations, Unique Events, and leading engineers Arup Scotland to produce a feasibility study for the council. The cancellation of the Hogmanay Concert in the Gardens due to bad weather in 2003-04 has been the catalyst for the project. It is hoped that the new venue will help attract more big-name pop acts to Edinburgh. Many top performers currently choose to play in Glasgow due to the lack of suitable facilities in the Capital.
