They get right up the noses of local politicians who take it as a personal affront if their area is the subject of criticism. But the Carbuncles are back. The architecture magazine Prospect yesterday launched its latest competition to highlight the bad, the worse and the ugly in Scottish architecture. The Carbuncle awards will name and shame the most disappointing building in Scotland, the most dismal place and the worst planning decision – an opportunity for some notable sore spots to join Cumbernauld, Airdrie and Glasgow's UGC in the architecture hall of infamy. A panel of experts will sift through nominations sent by members of the public to the website, www.prospectmagazine.com/carbuncles and a shortlist drawn up to be announced at the Scottish Design Show on October 6. The winner will be announced later that month.
