From the foot of the Scott Monument, it must rate as one of the most spectacular views anywhere. On its imposing rocky perch, Edinburgh Castle gleams in the afternoon sunshine while the ancient spires and tenements on the Royal Mile stand to attention, in a kind of architectural salute to Princes Street. For the hundreds of thousands of tourists and visitors who descend on the Capital each year, it's the perfect sight to greet them when they first emerge from the depths of Waverley Station. But that is just one half of the story; one side of the street. For what's for sure is that the creators of architectural wonders like Ramsay Garden and the Royal Scottish Academy never thought for a moment that their work would in the future be forced to gaze upon one of the worst examples of high street shopping.
